From phoyt at biochem.okstate.edu Fri Jul 13 09:54:44 2007 From: phoyt at biochem.okstate.edu (Peter R. Hoyt) Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2007 11:54:44 -0500 Subject: [farmanimals] Regretfully, a market question. Message-ID: <4697AE54.3000109@biochem.okstate.edu> I've been asked by my University to try and estimate usage of agriculturally-related microarrays. It is part of justifying the existence of our Core Facility, that I direct. It also might justify money to purchase a new oligo library (or two!). So while detesting use (abuse?) of this respected forum for marketing, I'm asking if anyone has heard of, or knows of, market trends in agriculture microarray usage. I've searched 2 days and found that while statements like "... a billion dollar industry by 2008..." are common, actual numbers on arrays sold or used is only available for some thousands of dollars, through Market Survey groups. That would make for an expensive phone call from my business office. What I need are very approximate numbers regarding microarrays actually used per year (in the USA for example) and then how many microarrays are used for an ag-related organism like corn, or rice, or wheat, or cows, or pigs... you get the idea. If someone can provide ball-park estimates, it might be all the business office needs, and I'd certainly appreciate it. You can email me privately or respond to the forum as you see fit. To the moderators, I apologize. Peter -- Peter R. Hoyt, Ph. D.
